The area around our host community of N'Gourti is a popular livestock breeding area. This is due to its proximity to the regular seasonal migration routes of grazing animals, such as goats, sheep, cattle, camels, donkeys and horses, and to the abundance of local high-quality grazing land. As a result, livestock breeding is the most common agricultural practice in the area and is the main source of income for the local communities. However, N'Gourti is also an area prone to drought. For livestock, the impact of disease and infection is more acute during such conditions. In recent years, the health of livestock herds has been affected by suspected cases of pasteurellosis, foot-and-mouth disease, and gastrointestinal parasitism.
The total livestock headcount from the 2022 census estimated there to be 1,728,292 cattle, 1,066,589 sheep, 1,706,902 goats, and 443,533 camels. In 2022, we invested approximately US$1,700 to sponsor a vaccination and deworming programme for livestock owned by the local community. The programme vaccinated and dewormed 5,288 camels, and 3,087 goats and sheep, helping farmers and their families protect their livestock from preventable diseases.

The rural municipality of N'Gourti has three integrated health centres: N'Gourti, Kossotori, and Blahardey. The main infections affecting the population of the area are acute respiratory infections, malaria and diarrhoea. The health system is characterised by low health coverage and access to health services. Medical evacuation remains very difficult given the condition of the rural roads and the high cost of fuel. Hence there is a need to provide health support to the local communities through medical supplies, donations and the development of health infrastructure. Savannah completed the construction of the N'Gourti pharmacy in 2019. Savannah funded the approximate US$14,500 construction cost of the pharmacy and also provides medical supplies to the dispensaries in the area every year. In 2019, Savannah supplied approximately US$18,200 worth of pharmaceutical products to the N'Gourti district hospital and the Blahardey dispensary.

The project is part of the Memorandum of Understanding (“MOU”) signed on 29 September 2015 with nine local communities in the Uruan Local Government Areas of Akwa Ibom State during the construction phase of Savannah’s Eastern Pipeline ("EPL") project. The EPL is a 32km gas pipeline transporting gas from Savannah’s Uquo Central Processing Facility to customers such as Calabar power station and the Lafarge cement factory. The pipeline crosses five local government areas, Odukpani, Uruan, Okobo, Oron and Udung Uko, located in the Akwa Ibom and Cross River states, and impacts 72 local communities within those areas. Implementation committees for the MOU were set up in both states, comprising representatives from the communities, government and company representatives. The community representatives were nominated by the leadership of the local communities under the supervision of the relevant local state Ministries of Environment. The Ekim Enen local community nominated the new town hall project to be executed by Accugas, which the company then evaluated to ensure it was cost-effective and in line with the MOU budget. Following the completion of the project on 21 May 2019, the community confirmed that the new town hall, which can accommodate up to 200 people, met their needs for a conducive meeting space.
